Acne Vulgaris

Acne vulgaris is frequently localized to the face and sometimes body affecting appearance and resulting in all sorts of psychosocial impacts including anxiety and depression, social withdrawal, and lack of self-confidence. These negative impacts are often the main reason for individuals with acne vulgaris to seek help. The impact of facial acne vulgaris on health-related quality of life can be profound and similar to that reported by patients with other chronic diseases, such as diabetes and asthma.
It’s profound psychological and social effects are not necessarily related to its severity. Even mild acne can be significantly disabling. Acne can affect people of all ages but it mainly occurs during the teenage years. Approximately 80% of people between the ages of 12 and 25 develop acne.
In recent years, some studies have revealed the impact acne has on the psyche.
The following are some of the problems that with acne people may face.

Self-esteem and body image

-Some find it hard to start new relationships, especially with the opposite sex.
-In extreme cases, social phobia might develop.
-Severe depression and/or anxiety
-Lack of Self Esteem
-Lethargy
-Mood swings
-Social withdrawal
-Anger
-Embarrassed and avoiding eye contact.
- Some grow their hair long to cover their face. Girls tend to wear heavy makeup to cover the acne, even though they know that this sometimes aggravates their acne even more.
-Body acne can reduce participation in sports like swimming, water polo or rugby because of the need to either wear a bathing suit or take their clothes off in public locker rooms. For girls, embarrassing to wear low cut outfits and tend to cover themselves often.
This list can go on and on and as I post more material, we will get deeper into the depth of what people need to be aware of. Especially parents who deal with kids suffering from this awful disease.
